Creating an E-commerce Business in The Bahamas
Launching an online store in The Bahamas is incredibly rewarding, but it comes with a unique set of challenges, including the slow approval times and cumbersome process of attaining licensing, the difficulty in accepting payments online in The Bahamas, and the difficulty of creating and managing a website.
Here is the reality of what it takes to start an e-commerce business in The Bahamas from scratch, and how you can bypass the hardest parts.
Step 1: Making Your Business Legal
Before you can sell a single item online, you need to set up your business entity legally and receive licensure from the Bahamian government (on paper, this is very simple, but the process takes a long time due to bureaucracy and inefficiency of the government agencies) :
- Register Your Business Name: You will need to get your Trade Name approved by the Department of Inland Revenue (DIR). If you are forming a Limited Company instead of a Sole Proprietorship, you must do this through the Registrar General’s Department first. (This process is usually fast in our experience).
- Get Agency Approvals: Depending on what you sell, you may need approvals from Physical Planning, the Ministry of Works, or Environmental Health Services. (Here is a list of the types of approval needed provided by the Department of Inland Revenue.)
- National Insurance Board (NIB): You must be registered with NIB. You don’t need a physical letter of good standing anymore, but your contributions must be up to date for electronic verification.
- Apply for a Business License: Submit your approved trade name, NIB registration, and approvals to the DIR to get your official Business License.
- (For Non-Bahamians): If you are a non-citizen, you must first submit a Project Proposal to the Bahamas Investment Authority (BIA) and meet a minimum capital investment threshold (currently BS$500,000) in an area not reserved for 100% Bahamian.
This process can take a long time due to inefficiency in government departments*
Step 2: The Technical Struggle of E-commerce
Once your business is legally established, you have to actually build the store. This is where most Bahamian entrepreneurs hit a brick wall.
If you try to build it yourself, you are looking at a highly technical, multi-step process:
- Choosing a Platform: You have to figure out if you want to use Shopify, WordPress (WooCommerce), or another builder.
- Web Hosting and Design: You need to purchase server space, configure your domain’s DNS settings, install SSL certificates to encrypt customer data, and design the site to look good on both mobile and desktop.
The Payment Integration Nightmare
This is the hardest part of e-commerce in The Bahamas. Standard international processors like Stripe or Square—the ones all the YouTube tutorials tell you to use—do not work for Bahamian bank accounts out of the box.
To actually accept credit cards on your website and get the money deposited into your Bahamian bank, you have to:
- Apply for a specialized merchant account with a local commercial bank (like Scotiabank, RBC, or Bank of The Bahamas).
- Wait weeks or months for corporate approval.
- Partner with a regional payment gateway like PowerTranz (formerly First Atlantic Commerce) or local platforms like Kanoo.
- Code the gateway into your website. You have to manually integrate complex API keys, configure secure tokens, and set up webhooks. If you make a single error in the code, your checkout page will crash, payments will fail, or worse, your site could be vulnerable to fraud.
